Speech Team

The act of speaking, "speech." It happens every moment in every corner of the world. So, what exactly is a Speech Team? It's just what it sounds like! A team for speakers. This is an extracurricular team, just like the football, baseball, or soccer team. We travel around the State, and sometimes to other states to tournaments where our team, comprised of 30+ students, competes in various speaking events of their choice. There are fifteen different categories from which a member can choose.
Events include:
Broadcasting-The student takes on the role of a Radio Broadcaster.
Dramatic Interpretation-(a.k.a. D.I.) The student performs a dramatic selection which must be memorized and has time limitations.
Duo Interpretation-A funny or dramatic cutting performed by two students functioning as a team.
Extemporaneous Speaking-The student gives a limited prep speech on a current issue.
Humorous Interpretation-(a.k.a. H.I.) The student performs a funny piece which must be memorized and has time limitations.
Impromptu Speaking-A limited prep speech with topic selected at tournament.
Improvisational Duo-A limited prep performance involving the portrayal of two characters.
Oratorical Declamation-Student delivers an oratory written by another person.
Original Oratory-An original oratory prepared and presented by student to persuade or inform.
Poetry Interpretation-The interpretation of a published poem or poems.
Prose Interpretation-The interpretation of a published prose cutting of literature.
Solo Acting-Performance by student to portray a single character.
Storytelling-Recreation of a story to entertain the audience.

Membership is open to any student at Bethlehem in good academic standing. After school practice is required each week. Forensics Class is open to Sophomores through Seniors and creates the core of the Bethlehem Speech Team. You do not have to be in the Forensics Class to be on the Speech Team. You may join on an after school basis. To be on the Speech Team, strong parent involvement is expected by coaching, transporting, and judging for the team. Tournaments are held on Saturdays. You are restricted in your competition apparel, hair, make up, and accessories. The Speech Team has three fund raisers each year to help defray the cost of competition. The student is responsible for all other financial obligations.
