COLLEGE BOUND READING
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)
Grade: 9
This course is intended to develop and expand reading skills. Strategies for reading both fiction and non-fiction selections and reading for different purposes will be taught. A wide variety of activities will emphasize skills such as developing vocabulary, using reference materials, using inference and context clues, recognizing main idea, sequencing, drawing conclusions, making predictions, summarizing, recalling facts and details, interpreting charts and graphs, and distinguishing fact and opinion. This course will meet the freshman English requirement. Admission is based on text scores and consultation with parents and previous teachers.
CB ENGLISH I
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)
Grade: 9
Students will write for a variety of audiences and purposes to prepare them for their post-secondary interests and vocations. Modes will include personal/reflective, literary, and transactive writing. Reading instruction will be based on exploring the different genres of literature and will include the reading of four full length novels or non-fiction texts. Instruction in standard language conventions will focus on the parts of speech and punctuation.
HONORS ENGLISH I
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 4 pts.)

This course is designed to prepare students to enroll inthe Advanced Placement Composition and/or Advanced Placement Literature courses. The focus of the course will be the same as College Bound English I, but the students will be expected to progress at an accelerated rate. The reading list will be more intensive and will include a summer reading requirement. Admission is based on test scores and consultation with parents and previous teachers.
CB ENGLISH II
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)
Grade: 10
College Bound English II students will write for a variety of audiences and purposes to prepare them for their post-secondary interests and vocations. Modes will include personal/reflective, literary, and transactive writing. Reading instruction will be based on multi-cultureal literature as well as a study of four novels or non-fiction books. Instruction instandard language conventions will focus on precise sentence structure.
HONORS ENGLISH II
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 4 pts.)

This course is designed to prepare students to enroll in the Advanced Placement Composition and/or Advanced Placement Literature courses. The focus of the course will be the same as College Bound English II, but the students will be expected to progress at an accelerated rate. College Bound English III students will write for a variety of audiences and purposes to prepare them for their post-secondary interests and vocations. Modes will include personal/reflective, literary, and transactive writing. Reading instuction will be based on major works of American literature as well as a discussion of four novels or non-fiction books. A special concentration will be given to review and practice of language conventions (grammar, usage, style) in preparation for the ACT exam.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT COMPOSITION AND LANGUAGE
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 5 pts.)

The AP course in English Language and Composition engages students in becoming skilled readers of prose written in a variety of rhetorical contexts, and in becoming skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their writing and their reading should make students aware of the interactions among a writer's purposes, audience expectations, and subjects as well as the way generic conventions and the resources of language contributte to effectiveness in writing. Students will be expected to take the College Board's Advanced Placement exam in May which may result in college credit.
CB ENGLISH IV
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)

College Bound English IV students will write for a variety of audiences and purposes to prepare them for their post-secondary interests and vocations. Modes will include personal/reflective, literary, and transactive writing. Reading instruction will be based on major works of British and World Literature as well as a discussion of four novels or non-fiction books. A special concentration will be given to review and practice of language conventions (grammar, usage, style) in preparation for the ACT exam.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION
2 semesters, 1 credit, 5 pts.)
Grade: 12
The AP English Literature and Composition course is designed to engage students in the careful reading anc critical analysis of literature. Novels and plays will be emphasized but other genres such as short stories and poetry will also be covered. Students will read works from the American, British and World Literature canon. Though there will be quizzes and tests, discussion using the Socratic Method will be emphasized. Active participation is a must for this course. Students will write interpretive, analytical and argumentative essays on the works they read. Two novels will be assigned for summer reading. Students will be expected to take the College Board's Advanced Placement exam in May which may result in college credit.
YEARBOOK
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)
Grades: 11, 12
In this course, students learn journalistic techniques and computer programs in order to produce the yearbook. Students will plan the book, determine the theme and cover design, sell advertising and design ad pages, complete sections devoted to student activities, and manage book sales.
