WORLD GEOGRAPHY

The primary focus of this course is to provide the student with an understanding of the physical world and the forces which shape it. Major topics include landforms, bodies of water, climate, agriculture, physical systems, and the environment. Knowledge of the physical world is used to explore relationships among the various cultures.
WORLD CIVILIZATIONS

Students will be introduced to the major civilizations of the world and study how their government, value systems, economics, social systems, art & architecture, technology, and communication have shaped the modern world.
U.S. HISTORY
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 3 pts.)

This course is designed to explore the significant concepts, personalities, and events that have shaped the United States and its evolving role in world affairs. Students will study the philosophy, politics, economics, social systems, art/architecture, technology, and written communication that have been instrumental in both the foundation and development of the U.S. Civilization.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY
(2 semesters, 1 credit, 5 pts.)
Prerequisite: Recommendation of World Civilizations teacher

This course is a survey of the history of the United States from exploration, colonization, formation and duration of nationhood. Emphasis is placed on critical thinking skills, evaluation and conclusion with prediction. Students evaluate primary documents, look at interpretation or historiography and write numerous essays. Discussion questions will be presented as a means for the student to reach an understanding of the "conceptual" and "thematic" history of U.S. culture. The course requires a willingness on the part of the student to devote considerable time to reading, writing and study. Students will be expected to take the College Board's Advanced Placement exam in May which my result in college credit.
AMERICAN GOVERNMENT

ECONOMICS

This course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the impact of economic growth and governmental fiscal and monetary policies of the U.S. system and other world systems. The student will develop an understanding of basic economic principles and how economic decisions affect one's life.
POLITICAL SCIENCE
(POL 101, POL 285)

A dual credit course offered in partnership with St. Catharine College, POL 101 covers a broad study of the American governmental system and political process while POL 285 is a readings course covering selected topics. These topics will vary from year to year. Some research on assigned topics is required. This full year course will substitute for the American Government/Economics requirement.
PSYCHOLOGY

This course is designed to introduce basic theories and practices in the field of Physchology. Significant historical figures, basic research methods, human development, and psychological disorders will be studied. This course will allow students greater insight into their own lives to provide a basis for personal growth.
