New Hire!
Welcome to Bethlehem, Mr. Helmkamp!
We are excited to announce that Mr. Matt Helmkamp will join Bethlehem High School as our new Science Teacher for the 2026–2027 school year!
Mr. Helmkamp brings an incredible background to our students, including more than 25 years of experience in chemical manufacturing, project management, and quality work across Los Angeles, Houston, New Zealand, and Louisville. He studied chemical engineering at Purdue University and Caltech, where he was a National Science Foundation Graduate Fellow, and has authored three technical publications.
Before stepping fully into the classroom, Mr. Helmkamp served as a substitute teacher within the Archdiocese and JCPS and most recently as a long-term substitute teaching Algebra and Geometry right here at Bethlehem. We are thrilled to expand his role in our Science Department!
Mr. Helmkamp is passionate about academic rigor and real-world learning. His vision includes:
Field experiences to see science in action at the UofL Medical School, industrial plants, and laboratories
Encouraging student participation in local science fairs
Hands-on, engaging experiments
His commitment to the integration of faith and science was strengthened through his participation in the Saint Albert Initiative at Bellarmine, and he remains deeply involved in his church, leading Bible studies and serving his community. He has also volunteered with Junior Achievement, coached basketball, and judged science fairs.
Please join us in welcoming Mr. Helmkamp as he helps inspire the next generation of Bethlehem scientists!
