Each year on Veterans Day, Mrs. Brigid Melega and Mr. Gilly Simpson continue a powerful tradition: Mr. Simpson steps into Mrs. Melega’s junior classes to share the story of our local National Guard unit, Battery C, 2nd Battalion, 138th Field Artillery, and the tragedy they endured in Vietnam. On June 19, 1969, a surprise attack on their base—Firebase Tomahawk—claimed the lives of five men, with seven total lost within three weeks, marking the highest per-capita loss of any unit in the entire war. Their bravery and sacrifice drew national attention, leading to coverage on major news programs, two books, and a documentary produced in 2019 for the 50th anniversary, for which Mr. Simpson served as Executive Producer. Several of our students are directly related to these men, now in their late 70s and early 80s, making it even more meaningful that Mr. Simpson ensures every Bethlehem junior learns their story. Thanks to this yearly lesson, every student for the past six years has gained a deeper understanding of the courage, history, and sacrifice woven into our own community.
