For Sophomores
Sophomores should focus on developing effective study habits, maintaining good grades, and participating in extra-curricular activities. Students should be enrolled in challenging courses in preparation for college. Students should begin thinking about their future plans and start exploring college choices and careers.
Sophomore Year Planning Calendar
August - September
- Students should check their schedules to make sure levels and academic classes are appropriate.
- Students can apply for Bardstown-Nelson County Young Leaders. (see Ms. Koontz for application)
- Students are strongly encouraged to participate in extra-curricular activities.
- Ms. Koontz, College & Career Counselor will visit classrooms to discuss and answer questions concerning the Young Leaders Institute.
- Counselor will visit classrooms to introduce the Pre-ACT.
- Counselor will discuss National Honor Society and Governor's Scholar opportunities.
October - November
- Students should assess their study habits and continue to improve their skills.
- Students will explore career and college opportunities.
- Ms. Koontz will visit homerooms to distribute the Pre-ACT materials.
- Students should practice sample questions for the Pre-ACT.
- Students should begin application for Governor's School for the Arts. (see Ms. Koontz for application)
- Parent / Teacher Conferences & Grade Level Meetings
- Students should begin application for HOBY (Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership). (see Ms. Koontz for application)
- Students should begin application for the Governor's School for Entrepreneurs. (see Ms. Koontz for application)
December
- Students struggling in a course should meet with their teacher and/or see the counselor for help in developing effective study strategies.
- Students should be preparing for semester exams.
- Work towards leadership positions in extracurricular activities.
January
- Students should focus on their second-semester courses and improving study skills if needed.
- Ms. Livers, Dean of Academics, will visit homerooms to review the results of the Pre-ACT.
- Interested students can sign up for the PSAT 10.
- Students should continue exploring career and college planning.
- Ms. Livers, Dean of Academics, will begin meeting with students to begin course selection for their junior year.
February - March
- Ms. Livers, Dean of Academics, will continue to meet with students concerning course selection for their junior year.
- Interested students are invited to take the PSAT 10.
April - May
- Students struggling in a course should meet with their teacher and/or see the counselor for help in developing effective study strategies.
- Students should work to finish the year strong and make the 4th quarter their best quarter.
- Students should update their resumes.
- Students should be preparing for semester exams.
June - August
- Students should consider working and performing community service.
- Students should review National Honor Society and Governor Scholars Program requirements for applying for admission during the junior year.
- Students should be sure to complete their summer reading and assignments.
